Mrs Caterham is a neighbor of the Henry Tallants in Heythram, from whom Sophia and Arabella Tallant borrow several outdated issues of Lady's Monthly Museum, and the employer of Miss Blackburn, who she lets go at the beginning of the novel. Her daughters the Miss Caterhams are friends of Arabella and Sophia, and they taught them how to waltz in their schoolroom.
